VMWare Source Code Leaked by Anonymous Hackers

VMware on Tuesday announced that a single file from its ESX server hypervisor source code has been posted online, and it held out the possibility that more proprietary files could be leaked in the future. "The fact that the source code may have been publicly shared does not necessarily mean that there is any increased risk to VMware customers," VMware said in a statement.

"Hardcore Charlie" - who claims to have downloaded some 300 Megabytes of VMWare source code.

The leaked documents include what appear to be internal VMWare communications, pasted onto CEIEC letterhead and with official looking stamps. One email exchange, dated June 5, 2003 is from Jeffrey Sheldon to an internal VMWare listserv and has the subject "code review:untruncating segments.

Given the large number of service providers that run vSphere, security issues in ESX could potentially have a broad and widespread impact, according to security researchers. VMware says it is looking into the matter and will be canvassing its industry partners and developers in order to determine the source of the breach.

SQL Injection is a type of web application security vulnerability in which an attacker is able to submit a database SQL command which is executed by a web application, exposing the back-end database. Attackers utilize this vulnerability by providing specially crafted input data to the SQL interpreter in such a manner that the interpreter is not able to distinguish between the intended commands and the attacker’s specially crafted data. The interpreter is tricked into executing unintended commands.

SQL injection can be prevented if you adopt an input validation technique in which user input is authenticated against a set of defined rules for length, type, and syntax and also against business rules.

Brazil Under Anonymous Attack - Tangara da Serra city site defaced !

Anonymous Hackers attacked websites of Brazil's federal district and Tangara da Serra city on Sunday as well as one belonging to a Brazilian singer to protest the forced closure of Megaupload.com.

The attacks this week, which they call "#opmegaupload" shut down the websites of the FBI and US Justice Department for several hours to protest the closure of Megaupload.com.

Hackers succeed in shutting down the website of popular Brazilian singer Paula Fernandes. They posted the image of a grim-faced joker with a message saying, "If Megaupload is down, you are down too." It was signed "GhostofThreads".

Anonymous use DDoS attacks tools like so-called Low Orbit Ion Cannon which is a piece of software that volunteer hacktivists download to their PCs and choose to run, whereby it then starts blasting the target website with traffic.

Stats says that , in last 7 days LOIC downloaded by 66,500 People across the World to participate in DDOS attack.

However, the source of the attack--the IP address for the individual computers attempting to access the site can easily be traced when LOIC is used, putting participants at risk of prosecution. So, Anonymous has come up with a way to allow people to participate without risking arrest, Anonymous launched DDOS attacks on more than a dozen sites and used a new tactic.

The group distributed Web links yesterday during its attacks on the Department of Justice, FBI, Universal Music and a host of other sites, that made joining the attacks as easy as clicking the mouse. The links led to Web pages with special JavaScript instructions that automatically redirected the visiting computer to a Web site being targeted for attack. The computer continues attempting to access the target site until the Web page is closed.

Stratfor Back Online After Hack with message for Anonymous Hackers

Security analysis firm Stratfor has relaunched its website after Anonymous hackers brought down its servers and stole thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to its clients.

Hacking collective Anonymous admitted the cyber attack on Christmas Eve and went on to claim that it used the stolen details to make $500,000 in charitable donations to The American Red Cross and Save the Children, as well as other charities.Anonymous eventually released the stolen data to the world, including 75,000 credit card numbers and 860,000 usernames and passwords. Approximately 50,000 of those belong to .mil or .gov email accounts used by the US government.

"This was our failure," Chief Executive George Friedman said in a message to Stratfor's subscribers. "I take responsibility. I deeply regret that this occurred and created hardship for our customers and friends." Friedman also revealed that the company was targeted more than once by hackers and had known for some time about a data breach.He said he was first alerted to the website hack in early December weeks before the loose-knit hacking movement Anonymous took to Twitter to boast of bringing down the website and stealing a stash of credit card numbers, emails and other data from the company.

In a communication to the company's subscribers, Stratfor CEO George Friedman described the implications of the attack for those outside the company. "While the Internet has become indispensable, it also enables anonymity and undermines accountability," Friedman said. "We are now in a world in which anonymous judges, jurors and executioners can silence whom they want. This is a new censorship that doesn't come openly from governments but from people hiding behind masks."

In early December I received a call from Fred Burton, Stratfor’s vice president of intelligence. He told me he had received information indicating our website had been hacked and our customer credit card and other information had been stolen. The following morning I met with an FBI special agent, who made clear that there was an ongoing investigation and asked for our cooperation. We, of course, agreed to cooperate. The matter remains under active investigation.

From the beginning I faced a dilemma. I felt bound to protect our customers, who quickly had to be informed about the compromise of their privacy. I also felt bound to protect the investigation. That immediate problem was solved when the FBI told us it had informed the various credit card companies and had provided those companies with a list of compromised cards while omitting that it had come from us. Our customers were therefore protected, as the credit card companies knew the credit cards and other information had been stolen and could act to protect the customers. We were not compelled to undermine the investigation.

The FBI made it clear that it expected the theft to be exposed by the hackers. We were under no illusion that this was going to be kept secret. We knew our reputation would be damaged by the revelation, all the more so because we had not encrypted the credit card files. This was a failure on our part. As the founder and CEO of Stratfor, I take responsibility for this failure, which has created hardship for customers and friends, and I deeply regret that it took place. The failure originated in the rapid growth of the company. As it grew, the management team and administrative processes didn’t grow with it. Again, I regret that this occurred and want to assure everyone that Stratfor is taking aggressive steps to deal with the problem and ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

From the beginning, it was not clear who the attackers were. The term “Anonymous” is the same as the term “unknown.” The popular vision of Anonymous is that its members are young and committed to an ideology. I have no idea if this is true. As in most affairs like this, those who know don’t talk; those who talk don’t know. I have my theories, which are just that and aren’t worth sharing.

I was prepared for the revelation of the theft and the inevitable criticism and negative publicity. We worked to improve our security infrastructure within the confines of time and the desire to protect the investigation by not letting the attackers know that we knew of their intrusion. With the credit card information stolen, I assumed that the worst was done. I was wrong.

Early in the afternoon of Dec. 24, I was informed that our website had been hacked again. The hackers published a triumphant note on our homepage saying that credit card information had been stolen, that a large amount of email had been taken, and that four of our servers had been effectively destroyed along with data and backups. We had expected they would announce the credit card theft. We were dismayed that emails had been taken. But our shock was at the destruction of our servers. This attack was clearly designed to silence us by destroying our records and the website, unlike most attacks by such groups.

Attacks against credit cards are common, our own failures notwithstanding. So are the thefts of emails. But the deliberate attack on our digital existence was a different order of magnitude. As the global media marveled at our failure to encrypt credit card information, my attention was focused on trying to understand why anyone would want to try to silence us.

In the days that followed, a narrative evolved among people claiming to speak for Anonymous and related groups. It started with looking at our subscriber list and extracting corporate subscribers who were now designated as clients. The difference between clients and subscribers is important here. A client is someone you do customized work for. A subscriber is simply someone who purchases a publication, unchanged from what others read. A subscriber of The New York Times is not its client. Nevertheless, some of the media started referring to these subscribers as clients, reflecting the narrative of those claiming to speak with knowledge of our business.

From there, the storyline grew to argue that these “clients,” corporate and government, provided Stratfor with classified intelligence that we reviewed. We were no longer an organization that analyzed the world for the interested public, but rather a group of incompetents and, conversely, the hub of a global conspiracy. The media focused on the first while the hacking community focused on the second.

This was why they stole our email, according to some of them. As one person said, the credit cards were extra, something they took when they realized they could. It was our email they were after. Obviously, we were not happy to see our emails taken. God knows what a hundred employees writing endless emails might say that is embarrassing, stupid or subject to misinterpretation. What will not appear is classified intelligence from corporations or governments. They may find, depending on what they took, that we have sources around the world, as you might expect. It is interesting that the hacker community is split, with someone claiming to speak for the official Anonymous condemning the hack as an attack on the media, which they don’t sanction, and another faction defending it as an attack on the rich and powerful.

The interpretation of the hackers as to who we are — if indeed that was their interpretation — was so wildly off base as to stretch credulity. Of course, we know who we are. As they search our emails for signs of a vast conspiracy, they will be disappointed. Of course we have relationships with people in the U.S. and other governments and obviously we know people in corporations, and that will be discovered in the emails. But that’s our job. We are what we said we were: an organization that generates its revenues through geopolitical analysis. At the core of our business, we objectively acquire, organize, analyze and distribute information.

I don’t know if the hackers who did this feel remorse as they discover that we aren’t who they said we were. First, I don’t know who they actually are, and second, I don’t know what their motives were. I know only what people claiming to be them say. So I don’t know if there is remorse or if their real purpose was to humiliate and silence us, in which case I don’t know why they wanted that.

And this points to the real problem, the one that goes beyond Stratfor’s own problem. The Internet has become an indispensible part of our lives. We shop, communicate, publish and read on it. It has become the village commons of the planet. But in the village commons of old, neighbors who knew and recognized each other met and lived together. Others knew what they did in the commons, and they were accountable.

In the global commons, anonymity is an option. This is one of the great virtues of the Internet. It is also a terrible weakness. It is possible to commit crimes on the Internet anonymously. The technology that enables the Internet also undermines accountability. Given the profusion of technical knowledge, the integrity of the commons is in the hands of people whose identities we don’t know, whose motives we don’t understand, and whose ability to cause harm is substantial. The consequence of this will not be a glorious anarchy in the spirit of Guy Fawkes, but rather a massive repression. I think this is a pity. That’s why I wonder who the hackers actually are and what cause they serve. I am curious as to whether they realize the whirlwind they are sowing, and whether they, in fact, are trying to generate the repression they say they oppose.

The hack hit the Sony Pictures Facebook page and its web site homepage, according to reports and tweets from those involved. Comments were left on the web pages, but have since been removed.

The attacks carry the name Op Sony and were noted through the @s3rver_exe Twitter account. "#OpSony SonyPictures Hacked! by s3rver.exe , Anonnerd and N3m3515," says a tweet from that user, who continued, "I uploaded a @YouTube video Sony Pictures Hacked By Anonymous."

“Your support of the act is a signed death warrant to Sony Company and Associates. Therefore, yet again, we have decided to destroy your network. We will dismantle your phantom from the internet. Prepare to be extinguished. Justice will be swift, and it will be for the people, whether some like it or not,” Anonymous.

Kuwait Government will suspend Twitter accounts of Anonymous Users

In Kuwait, the Ministry of Interior is in the process of enforcing a rule of their own on Twitter which prevents Kuwaiti users from using anonymous accounts. The ministry said in a press statement that such measure comes in order to preserve the rights of citizens and residents of people who were used to slander them and their families under fake names, saying that such is a crime punishable by law.

The statement went on to say that the move was meant to protect the rights of citizens and residents who have found themselves the subject of slander through statements made by these anonymous accounts, a crime punishable by law in the country, as it is in the UAE.

It confirmed that all public have the freedom of expression guaranteed to them by the Constitution as long as those practices are going according to the law, especially with regard to using the Twitter site.

December 17 will mark the anniversary of many historic events: three months since the beginning of the Occupy movement; the one-year anniversary of the death of Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian man whose self-immolation initiated the first of protests which became the Tunisian Revolution, and eventually cascaded into the Arab Spring; and 24 years since the birth of Bradley Manning, the army private accused of leaking classified information to Wikileaks. Manning’s first hearing is scheduled for Dec 16, 586 days after his arrest, where he will face a military panel who decide if will go to trial.

Bradley Manning’s alleged transfer of sensitive information to Wikileaks allowed the organization to release diplomatic cables confirming suspected corruption at high levels of the Tunisian government. The outrage over the circumstances surrounding Mohamed Bouazizi’s death was intensified after these revelations, and small protests quickly turned into an uprising which toppled a long-standing regime. Tunisia is now recognized as the inspiration for the Arab Spring; uprisings such as those which shook Egypt’s Mubarak from power, and ended both Gaddafi’s regime and life.

The passion expressed by those in the Arab world inspired many activists in the west to stand together. The American Autumn began on September 17 with Occupy Wall Street, and similar protests soon erupted across the United States, as well as internationally. Occupy protesters peacefully marched, sang, danced, and drummed their way into the soul of their respective cities, but have often been met with hostility and aggression from law enforcement. In response, Occupiers have remained peaceful and continued protesting.

Operation Horizon will remind the world that we are united and that together, we will not fail.

Anonymous took responsibility of hacking into 50+ Toronto websites. In a YouTube video anon said
"We have been receiving plenty of complaints that Toronto business based websites have been hacked. People quickly assumed that OccupyTO was behind this, but luckily Anonymous stepped up to the plate for taking responsibilities for their actions. At this moment we do not know why the websites were redirect to OccupyTO’s website (www.occupyto.org). Although, this seemed to be a response to the first video that threatened to remove Toronto from the internet. All we can say at this point is that Anonymous, is stating a point that this occurred because of the cities actions to evict the protesters. A video is claiming that Anonymous attacked 50+ Toronto business based website, took down Canadian Craigslist website, and gained access to a valuable email account. We hope everything comes down to a peaceful agreement."

"It has come to our attention that some websites in Toronto have started re-directing to the occupyto.org website.  Please be advised that this action is NOT condoned by the Occupy Toronto movement, rather some individual has taken it upon themselves to compromise websites in this way. 

The issue seems to be related to websites running Joomla 1.5 or 1.6.  The solution is to check the source code of the page and search for the word ‘occupy’.  Once you have located the code you should have an indication of what article contains the script.  In some cases it may be in multiple articles.  Just edit and save each infected article and the problem should be solved.

If you are unable to solve the problem yourself, free support is being offered.  Just send an email to occupyto@blinktwice.ca with your website address and the username and password of an account that has access to edit your website.  Rest assured your login information will be held in the strictest confidence.  Once the problem is solved it is advised to change your password(s) to the site" Anonymous added.

Demand of Anonymous To Mexican Govt. & Bus Companies (#OpRoadSafe)

'Hacktivist' Anonymous has threatened the Mexican Government and local bus companies. According to a YouTube video Anonymous released fives demands in-front of the Mexican Government, if those demands not get fulfilled then Anon has planned massive cyber attack to Mexican government and bus companies on the December 10th under the banner of Op Carreteras Seguras (#OpRoadSafe)

Anonymous launched its latest digital campaign in an effort to publicize the fact that the Mexican government and bus companies are failing to stop kidnappings, rapes and robberies of passengers on the country’s lawless highways. Indeed, a mass grave containing 293 bodies was recently discovered in San Fernando, Tamauilpas just 90 miles south of the Rio Grande Valley. 

Authorities believe the victims were bus passengers abducted and murdered by members of the Zetas drug cartel.

Although dozens were arrested after the horrifying discovery, Anonymous says similar crimes continue in Tamaulipas and throughout Mexico, as only a minority of citizens travel by airplane, while the rest of the country is at the mercy of local bus companies and shoddy security.

Five Demands of Anonymous:-

1. All passenger buses travel on more secure tolls roads.
2. All buses should be equipped with GPS devices.
3. Live, remote cameras be installed on all buses.
4. Armed, plain clothes "bus marshals" travel on passenger buses.
5. Those arrested in the context of Mexico's ongoing drug war should be treated as prisoners under the guidelines of the Geneva Convention.

Australian Govt. Site Hacked By #Antisec Hackers

Hacktivist Anonymous hit the Australian cyber fence. Anonymous has been busy recently with many different things going on, one of them is the ever on going battle of censorship with governments. As a result an Australian government website has been defaced and left in fairly messed up state. Previously Anonymous hacked and releases government records including Australian council data.
Recently Anon hacked and defaced the The CLGCA (Casino, Liquor and Gaming Control Authority) Govt. of Australia. The message on the deface page contains:-
"This domain has been seized by Exphin1ty and #Antisec For Australia's decision to censor the internet. Consider this a warning as what is yet to come. We encourage all of our #Antisec friends to aim your canons at any Gov.Au address and flaunt the tag #Antisec on any defecement, leak or database dump. "
The CLGCA site is still unavailable. Site restoration and maintenance is going on.

Also the message of the hacker is clearly indicating that the Govt. of Australia might have to face massive cyber attack form the Hacktivist.

Anonymous Exposed The Private Information of The Special Agent, Officers, Cyber Crime Investigators Of Department Of Justice

The hacktivists claim to have hacked into Baclagan's Gmail account and to have accessed his voicemails and SMS message logs using unspecified techniques as part of their ongoing campaign against law enforcement officials and their "allies" in the computer security industry.

The email dump, released as a torrent last Friday in part of what has become the group's regular FuckFBIFriday release, is also said to contain personal information including Baclagan's home address and phone number. The cache of emails – which according to AntiSec are from the account of Fred Baclagan, a retired special agent supervisor of the Californian Department of Justice – includes 38,000 emails detailing various computer forensic techniques and cybercrime investigation protocols. 

Baclagan told that he was nobody special in the Justice Department ... which is what he would say, of course. He said that he had specialised in identity theft before he retired last year. "I'm really just a nobody," he told the Post, "just a local investigator, not involved in anything dynamic or dramatic

targeted a Special Agent Supervisor of the CA Department of Justice in charge of

computer crime investigations. We are leaking over 38,000 private emails which

contain detailed computer forensics techniques, investigation protocols as well

as highly embarrassing personal information. We are confident these gifts will 

bring smiles to the faces of our black hat brothers and sisters (especially 

those who have been targeted by these scurvy dogs) while also making a mockery 

of "security professionals" who whore their "skills" to law enforcement to 

protect tyrannical corporativism and the status quo we aim to destroy.

We hijacked two gmail accounts belonging to Fred Baclagan, who has been a cop

for 20 years, dumping his private email correspondence as well as several dozen 

voicemails and SMS text message logs. While just yesterday Fred was having a 

private BBQ with his CATCHTEAM high computer crime task force friends, we were 

reviewing their detailed internal operation plans and procedure documents. We 

also couldn't overlook the boatloads of embarrassing personal information about 

our cop friend Fred. We lulzed as we listened to angry voicemails from his 

estranged wives and ex-girlfriends while also reading his conversations with 

girls who responded to his "man seeking woman" craigslist ads. We turned on his 

google web history and watched him look up linux command line basics, golfing 

tutorials, and terrible youtube music videos. We also abused his google 

voice account, making sure Fred's friends and family knew how hard he was owned.

Possibly the most interesting content in his emails are the IACIS.com internal

email list archives (2005-2011) which detail the methods and tactics cybercrime 

units use to gather electronic evidence, conduct investigations and make 

arrests. The information in these emails will prove essential to those who want 

to protect themselves from the techniques and procedures cyber crime 

investigators use to build cases. If you have ever been busted for computer 

crimes, you should check to see if your case is being discussed here. There are 

discussions about using EnCase forensic software, attempts to crack TrueCrypt 

encrypted drives, sniffing wireless traffic in mobile surveillance vehicles, how 

to best prepare search warrants and subpoenas, and a whole lot of clueless 

people asking questions on how to use basic software like FTP. In the end, we

rickrolled the entire IACIS list, causing the administrators to panic and shut

their list and websites down.

These cybercrime investigators are supposed to be the cream of the crop, but we

reveal the totality of their ignorance of all matters related to computer

security. For months, we have owned several dozen white hat and law enforcement

targets-- getting in and out of whichever high profile government and corporate

system we please and despite all the active FBI investigations and several

billion dollars of funding, they have not been able to stop us or get anywhere

near us. Even worse, they bust a few dozen people who are allegedly part of an

"anonymous computer hacking conspiracy" but who have only used 

kindergarten-level DDOS tools-- this isn't even hacking, but a form of

electronic civil disobedience. 

We often hear these "professionals" preach about "full-disclosure," but we are

sure these people are angrily sending out DMCA takedown notices and serving

subpoenas as we speak. They call us criminals, script kiddies, and terrorists, 

but their entire livelihood depends on us, trying desperately to study our 

techniques and failing miserably at preventing future attacks. See we're cut 

from an entirely different kind of cloth. Corporate security professionals like

Thomas Ryan and Aaron Barr think they're doing something noble by "leaking" the

public email discussion lists of Occupy Wall Street and profiling the "leaders"

of Anonymous. Wannabe player haters drop shitty dox and leak partial chat logs

about other hackers, doing free work for law enforcement. Then you got people 

like Peiter "Mudge" Zatko who back in the day used to be old school l0pht/cDc 

only now to sell out to DARPA going around to hacker conventions encouraging 

others to work for the feds. Let this be a warning to aspiring white hat 

"hacker" sellouts and police collaborators: stay out the game or get owned and 

exposed. You want to keep mass arresting and brutalizing the 99%? We'll have to 

keep owning your boxes and torrenting your mail spools, plastering your personal 

information all over teh internets.
